The most important person during an innocent person’s trial is the judge, and after an innocent person’s conviction the most important people are the judges considering his or her direct and post-conviction appeals. The trial judge decides what physical, forensic and testimonial evidence the jury will consider, as well as the jury instructions. The appellate judges determine what issues they consider important enough to review. However, it is possible those judges are no more aware of how various factors contribute to a wrongful conviction than are the prosecutors representing the government.

 

Judges who have a direct influence over the outcome of an innocent person’s trial or appeal are normally exposed to information and influences that encourage them to get “tough on crime” and at least unconsciously presume a defendant is guilty, with no consideration for the effect those attitudes have on the conviction of innocent men, women and juveniles.

 

To help educate judges about wrongful convictions, we are offering a six-issue Justice:Denied “gift” subscription to any state or federal trial or appellate court judge for the special price of $10. We will not disclose your identify as the purchaser. You can purchase an unlimited number of judge subscriptions. If you want to help inform judges about wrongful convictions but don’t know of a specific judge you want to receive Justice:Denied, send us $10 for each subscription and we will select the judge(s) for you. You can inform us if you prefer federal or state judges in a particular state or district. $90 will pay for a subscription for each of the nine U.S. Supreme Court justices, and the highest criminal court of most states have between five and nine justices.
