Action List for Volume 2 Issue 4

Due to the immediacy of Philip Workman's situation Justice Denied is publishing the following appeal from Amnesty International:

Amnesty International USA asks for your Cooperation

The impending execution of Philip Workman if carried out will constitute a travesty of justice of even greater significance than previously believed and acknowledged (if that is possible).

Recent evidence obtained from the State of Tennessee itself indicates high ranking officials conspired to rig Philip Workman's January 25th clemency hearing in an effort to carry out an execution that a majority of Tennessee's citizens do not support. Furthermore, ballistics tests carried out by Shelby County medical examiner O.C. Smith carry no weight because he violated all rules of scientific study in order to obtain the conclusion he wanted.

What You can Do Now!

1) A honking for clemency campaign needs to begin Monday in Nashville and other communities around the state - but particularly here in Nashville. In order to do that we need:

2) Volunteers beginning Monday to hold signs on the sidewalk outside of the Governors office and across from Legislative Plaza from 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This will need to continue through Thursday. Monday is important because we want to announce this effort. We have media that will help us during the week.

3) We need to some nicely made signs of on 24" x 36" foam board that say:
HONK for CLEMENCY for WORKMAN

4) We need a set or two of appropriate size stencils and Amnesty International has a bag of markers to fill in the lettering. We need at least 6-8 signs. We can meet this weekend to make these signs.
Call 615-329-0048 for more information and advice to do this in Nashville and anywhere in Tennessee.

5) Radio Talk Shows: We need to utilize this "public forum" to make the issue of state killings and the execution of Philip Workman hot news. Anyone can do this from work or home. In communities outside Nashville persons comfortable going on the radio should try and schedule guests to be on these shows next week (and into the future).

6) IN NASHVILLE: We need to identify someone who is fluent in Spanish so we can schedule you on the Hispanic (spanish speaking) radio station for this purpose.

TIME IS RUNNING OUT!

Keep sending those letters for clemency to Governor Sundquist. Hand-written notes and letters are going to the top of the pile to be read immediately. Send to:

The Innocence Protection Act has been introduced in the U.S. House by Reps. Ray LaHood (R-IL) and William Delahunt (D-MA) as H.R. 4167. Senators Patrick Leahy (D-VT), Gordon Smith (R-OR) and Susan Collins (R-ME) are the sponsors of the Senate bill, S. 2690.

This important legislation would provide new safeguards in capital cases by:

Allowing prisoners on death row to request DNA testing on evidence from their case that is in the government's possession.
Providing mechanisms to guarantee that everyone has access to a professional and experienced lawyer.
Requiring judges to inform juries of all sentencing options, including the option to sentence a defendant to life imprisonment without parole.
